Building a career timeline Germans can scan in ninety seconds
How English-speaking professionals can structure chronology, gaps, and title translations for German applications.
German recruiters often skim CVs for continuity before they read achievements. A dense two-column design that looks modern in London can slow that skim.
Put months where they matter
List month and year for each role when gaps exist. A silent six-month pause invites speculation; a brief line about parental leave, a move to Stuttgart, or contract end removes it.
Translate titles carefully
“Growth lead” or “customer success ninja” may need a plain equivalent in parentheses. Match the language of the job ad without inventing a German title you never held.
Keep education factual
Degree names, institutions, and years belong near the top for many German employers, especially regulated or engineering-adjacent roles. Save portfolio flair for later pages.
A clean timeline will not win the interview alone, but it keeps you in the pile long enough for your preparation work to matter.
