Practising salary questions without sounding transactional

Phrases and pacing for discussing compensation after interview preparation with German employers.

Hands reviewing paperwork and a calculator on a desk

Compensation conversations in Germany often arrive earlier than candidates from other markets expect — sometimes in the first screening call. Treating the moment as a duel usually backfires.

Anchor to the role, not your rent

State a researched range tied to the function and region, then ask how the employer frames total compensation. Mentioning only your previous city’s salary can sound disconnected from Baden-Württemberg or other local markets.

Separate base from extras

Ask calmly about bonus structure, vacation days, remote policy, and relocation support. Stacking every ask in one breath makes the panel defensive. Sequence matters.

Practise the pause

After you give a number, stop talking. Filling silence with discounts is a common English-speaker habit that weakens an otherwise solid interview.

If you want structured rehearsal, our offer and salary session focuses on these exact moments.
